Are the tools ready for use at the time of purchase?
The chisels are delivered with a sharp cutting angle of 25°. This angle is suitable for work with soft to medium hard wood. We recommend that the burr at the cutting edge of our chisels is removed with a sharpening stone before the first use in order to achieve the best possible results. The carving chisels are delivered factory sharpened with a cutting edge angle of 17° and ready for use. This angle is suitable for soft to medium hard wood.
Why are the two cherries not on all tools as steel stamps?
As the steel stamp has to be pressed into the blade with pressure, a breakage of the tool can occur with the blades that are narrower than 10 mm. For this reason, only the tools with a width of more than 10 mm have been stamped so far. Since 2017, we have now created the technical possibilities to equip tools smaller than 10 mm with a stamp.
Why do the tools shine?
Our tools are polished to a high gloss finish in a process we have developed ourselves. This scoring-free surface makes it easier to penetrate into the wood and also makes it easier to resharpen and remove the blade.
What is the right care for the tools?
Our tools are made of a carbon tool steel and not stainless material. Thus, the tools are subject to corrosion by nature. Corrosion can already occur with these tools due to hand perspiration or fluctuations in air humidity.
For this reason, we recommend that all our customers clean the tools after use or during storage with a cloth lightly soaked in oil (white oil or our art. no.
3708000). This light film of oil can prevent corrosion.
Which steel qualities are used for the tools?
For chisels, sculptor's chisels, notched chisels and standard shredder's chisels we use only high-carbon steel of our own mixture with a hardness of HRc 61. The HSS turning chisels are made of high speed steel. This steel is characterised by its high heat resistance. With a hardness of HRc 62-63, they are far above the DIN standard over the entire useful length of the blade.
What is better, wooden or plastic handle?
The wooden handle transfers the power of impact best into the blade tip. If chisels are mainly used for outdoor work, we recommend plastic booklets due to the weather conditions.
Why wooden handles with or without varnish?
For decades we have been providing the wooden booklets of our chisels with a lacquer coating. This prevents moisture from penetrating into the wood and the booklet remains in perfect condition for a very long time.
Thanks to a new technology, we have recently been able to significantly reduce the application of paint and at the same time protect the exercise books as well as before.
For us, it is particularly important that you can see and feel the wood of your magazine even more directly in the future. The new feel feels particularly natural and fits even better in the hand. Best conditions for working with our chisels. We have been thrilled by the reactions of wood professionals from all over the world so far and we hope that this innovation will soon be at your fingertips.
By the way: The reduction of paint application and the new formulation also conserves natural resources and therefore our environment.
Why "Made in Germany"?
Only at our Remscheid location can we find skilled workers who enable us to produce quality tools that enjoy an excellent reputation worldwide.
How are the tools hardened?
All different types of chisels (Firmer, Carpenters' chisels and Gouges etc.) as well as the carving and woodturning chisels made of high-carbon steel are hardened in a salt bath. With a hardness of 61 HRc over the entire useful length (2/3 of the blade) the tools are above the DIN specifications.
How far are the tools hardened?
2/3 of the blade (= usable length) is hardened on all tools
Can I renew handles?
It is generally possible to renew the handles by purchasing loose handles. However, we recommend our resharpening service.
Are there two different »KIRSCHEN« labels?
Most of the products from »KIRSCHEN« Werkzeuge are labelled as genuine top-quality products. From January 2015, we will use this feature in a slightly revised form. But no matter what the label on your »KIRSCHEN« product looks like - the quality of our goods remains just as high as before.
